Route 66 Redirection Services
A Road to Success!

With over a hundred thousand men and women being released from correctional facilities all over the country and a recidivism rate of over fifty percent there needs to be a non-traditional approach in providing adequate services for these men and women returning back to society.

Route 66 Redirection Services envisions an all inclusive transitional home for men being released to the capital region of New York State. New York State has been in the forefront of initiating reentry programs. However, there exists a great void in the reentry dynamic in the capital region. Existing programs cater to individual obstacles that formally incarcerated individuals may encounter upon their release. Primarily, in the areas of housing and employment but this is not a holistic approach. Route 66 Redirection Services will be all inclusive program providing the needed services that a formally incarcerated individual will require upon their release. Route 66 Redirection Services understands that the transition from incarceration to society is very complex.

Route 66 Redirection Services will provide housing, counseling, job readiness Education and or vocational training, family awareness, support groups and personal hands on approach to ensure a road to success for all residents of Route 66 Redirection Services Transitional Home. For the past four decades, New York State has experienced a period of mass incarceration with prison populations steadily expanding. Consequently, there has been an accompanying mass release over this same period of time as 90% of people incarcerated are eventually released. This alone expounds on the need for adequate services to be made available for those men being released to their communities.

Route 66 Redirection Services Reentry Concept:Reentry refers to both a philosophic approach to criminal justice and to a process of community reintegration. As a philosophy “reentry” refers to an approach to the criminal justice system (especially corrections) that works towards the successful reintegration of an individual from the moment of first contact with the system. Therefore, as a process, reentry begins at the time of arrest and is completed when a person successfully stabilizes themselves within their community. By focusing on community reintegration, reentry seeks to identify and meet the needs of the individual at each point of the process in a way that supports success in the community. Furthermore, this definition of reentry emphasizes the belief that a person who successfully completes the process is more capable of leading a productive, crime free life then when they entered the criminal justice system.

Route 66 Redirection Services believes that the reentry process is comprised of five stages:
1. Arrest and Sentencing: the point of first contact with the criminal justice system through adjudication.
2. Incarceration: the period of time when an individual is incarcerated within an institution.
3. Pre-Release: the administrative practices and procedures that occur inside the institution that prepare a person for release. Depending on the institution the timeframe for this stage may vary with some lasting no more than a few hours and others a few days.
4. Release: the period of time beginning at release from the institution through an initial stabilization in the community.
5. Reentry/Reintegration: the point at which a person is reintegrated within their community and is actively pursuing a path towards a healthy and productive life without becoming a recidivist.

Route 66 Redirection Services will focus on “RELEASE and REENTRY/REINTEGRATION because Route 66 Redirection Services believes this is the critical point in the formally incarcerated transition back to society.

Route 66 Redirection Services will serve as a model reentry program for progressive formerly incarcerated men who wish to make a successful transition back into their communities. It will also provide a back-end initiative to stem the recidivism rate. The motivational thrust of establishing Route 66 Redirection Services Transitional Housing is to assist formerly incarcerated men to take hold of their lives and be an instrumental part in rebuilding the communities they once tore apart.
